Idlewild's New Director of Music Ministries

Landry Duvall

Landry’s journey as a musician began in the third grade at Hickory Creek Elementary School in McMinnville, TN. Hickory Creek was the only elementary school in Warren County with a full-time music teacher, Donna Campbell. Mrs. Campbell instilled a love of music in Landry from the very first class. Soon after, she helped his parents find a piano teacher and he began to take lessons.

In middle and high school, Landry put the piano aside and joined the band. There, he learned to play the clarinet and served three years as drum major. It wasn’t until his junior year when he began playing clarinet at First Baptist Church that he thought to play piano seriously again. The Music Director at FBC insisted he play the organ. The concept was laughable at first for Landry, but once he began, he fell in love.

Landry spent his college years at Tennessee Tech University where he majored in Music Education with an emphasis in clarinet. Throughout his first year, however, he continued to feel God’s call to pursue a vocational ministry in the church. This call helped him decide to transfer to Carson-Newman College where he spent three wonderful years working on a degree in Church Music and Organ. Once finished, he moved to Waco, Texas and completed a Master’s Degree in Church Music and Choral Conducting at Baylor University. Since then, Landry has had the great privilege to serve two incredible congregations: University Baptist Church in Austin, TX and his current congregation, River Road Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA.

I love to create intentional communities around the music program where people of all ages feel they can be participants. I am so excited to get to know members of your congregation and learn about their unique giftings. I believe the music program should inspire us to love God and our neighbors more fully, and I look forward to making beautiful music at Idlewild.

Personal Life

Landry lives with his partner, Robert and their pride and joy dog, Ollie. They love to travel and spend time in their current home in Richmond.
They are looking forward to moving to Memphis to explore the city and check out the food scene. If you have recommendations, send them their way!
