Sat Oct 20 - Midtown Civil Legal Clinic

Midtown Legal Clinic is 10:00-12:00 Saturday morning, October 20. Offered by Memphis Area Legal Services, this is for anyone dealing with civil (not criminal) legal problems. Sun Oct 21 - Young Adults Class & Lunch

On October 21, the Young Adult Sunday School class will meet at 9:40 a.m. in the sanctuary. Judy Johnson will give a talk about the sanctuary and the meaning behind its designs. At 12:30, young adults are invited to lunch, hosted by Judy Johnson (768 Charles Place).

Sun Oct 21 - PNC Listening Session

The Pastor Nominating Committee is holding a listening session open to the congregation Sunday, October 21, in the chapel following the 11:00 worship service. All members are invited to attend, to inform the committee about what you would like to see in our next pastor, and to share your vision of Idlewild’s future.

Sun Oct 21 – MICAH "Moving Memphis Forward" Public Meeting

The Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH) will hold their first public meeting Sunday, Oct. 21 at Mason Temple (930 Mason St.) from 4:30 to 6:00. The three MICAH task forces—Education Reform, Economic Equity, and Immigration and Intercultural Equity—will present their issues to our public officials and formally request their support. Many Idlewilders have been working on these task forces over the summer, and we have committed 60 people or more to be attendance. A carpool will leave from the church parking lot at 3:45 to go to the meeting. Please consider attending. See Facebook Event.

Oct 21 - QUEST youth group

QUEST youth group meets today, 6:00-7:30 at the church (T.K. Young Room) for dinner and fun activities.

Sun Oct 21 - BASIC youth group

BASIC youth group meets this evening at the home of Frank and Angela Kelly from 6:00 to 7:30 for a cookout and bonfire. If you need the address, contact Frank or see the weekly Youth Ministry Newsletter.

The Book Club is reading The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony this month. The next meeting is Thursday, October 25 (4th Thursday) at 2:00 p.m. in the parlor. Come to any or all meetings.

Thur Oct 25 - Theology on Tap

Theology on Tap for young adults is Thursday, October 25, 7:00 p.m. at Pyro’s on Union. Jon Huwe and Will Gibbons will lead the discussion on Voting and Christianity. Please arrive early if you want to get dinner.

Sat Oct 27 - MIFA Family Service Day

MIFA Family Service Day is 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Families (children and youth ages 6–13) learn about nutritional needs and challenges of seniors while packing pantry meals. Following the 11:00 service on Sunday, October 28, contractor Jamie Linkous and architect Kate Haywood will lead tours of the Jones Building. A lot has changed since July! Sun Oct 28 - Shower for Caitlin & Sara

A joint baby shower honoring staff members Caitlin Bomar and Sara Dorrien-Christians will be held Sunday, October 28, following the 11:00 worship service. It’s a diaper shower, so we are asking that you bring diapers, wipes, or gift cards. You may leave gifts in the T.K. Young Room prior to the worship service. Come and celebrate with these families as we prepare for the arrival of two more of God’s precious children.

Sun Oct 28 - Gay-Straight Fellowship Potluck Dinner

The Gay-Straight Fellowship meets Sunday, October 28, and everyone is invited. This will be a dinner potluck at 5:00 p.m. (please note time change) at the home of Keith and Katie Cole (1464 Goodbar Ave.). Chris Sanders with the Tennessee Equality Project will lead a discussion on the upcoming election and legislation affecting the LGBTQIA community. Feel free to invite a friend. Mon Oct 29 - Trunk or Treat

This year's Trunk or Treat Halloween Carnival is Monday, October 29 from 6:00 to 7:30 in the parking lot. Wear your costume, bring a friend, and carry a bag for treats. Tues Oct 30 – Steve Haynes Book Signing

At 6:00 p.m. October 30 at Novel bookstore, Idlewild's Theologian-in-Residence Steve Haynes will discuss and sign his latest book, The Battle for Bonhoeffer: Debating Discipleship in the Age of Trump. The book details the role German theologian and anti-Nazi martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-45) has played in American political and social discourse over the last two decades, culminating in the 2016 presidential election. The book, which includes a heartfelt open letter to “Christians who Love Bonhoeffer and (Still) Support Trump,” has been met with enthusiasm by reviewers.

A Common Table Pilgrimage to the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama is scheduled for November 3–4. See full details and register. 

Nov 6 - Beginning Yoga Classes (Tuesdays in November)

Come to a beginner-level yoga class Tuesday evenings in November, from 5:30 to 6:30 in the Narthex (entrance to the sanctuary). Led by a Certified Group Fitness instructor, the class is designed to help you unplug from stress. Bring a yoga mat if you have one! Donations are appreciated! Donations will fund the purchase of equipment as well as the instructor. Begins Tuesday, November 6.

Sat Nov 10 - Family fellowship (SK-5th)

Fellowship for SK-5th grade families is 4:30-7:00 Saturday, Nov. 10. Hosted by Jenna and Jeremy Sykes (487 Wolf View Cove 38018). It’s tailgate-themed, so come representing your favorite team.

Sat Nov 17 - Family fellowship (JK (4 years) or younger)

Fellowship for young families (at least one child JK or under, four years or younger) is 5:00-6:30 Saturday, Nov. 17. Hosted by Katie and Scott McLeod (507 Kinsman Rd. 38120). It’s tailgate-themed, so come representing your favorite team.

Sat Nov 17 - Auditions for Cotton Patch Gospel

Idlewild is putting on a musical in the spring! Did you know that “something’s brewing in Gainesville?” Or is it Bethlehem? On Saturday morning, November 17 from 9:30 to noon, open auditions will be held for the play “The Cotton Patch Gospel,” a musical that translates the gospel from Greek into Southern! Auditions are open to the congregation, but if you have friends who might enjoy trying out, encourage them to come. We already have a narrator and musicians, but an ensemble is needed for various roles. Come prepared to sing a song of your choice, and be sure to bring sheet music. A pianist will be provided.

Rehearsals begin at the end of February, and the play will be performed March 29, 30, and 31. If you have questions, please contact Steve Montgomery ( or Steve Berger (


Mon Dec 3 - Room In The Inn Volunteer Training 

A training session for Room In The Inn (RITI) volunteers will be held 5:30-7:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Idlewild. Training covers Homelessness in Memphis 101, RITI’s ministry and policies, and volunteering logistics. If you are considering volunteering or are simply curious, please attend. Questions? Idlewild will be hosting RITI (at Calvary Episcopal) the second Monday’s of the month beginning in November. RITI serves approximately 13 homeless women (and sometimes their children) overnight. Volunteers are needed to make meals and snack packs, set up mattresses and bedding, tend to the clothes closet, and serve on the morning clean-up shift. We also need a few people willing to spend the night.
