The Season of Advent - Calendars and Booklets available

Advent activity calendars and devotional booklets can help you journey through this time of preparation for the coming of the Christ Child. The calendar has daily activities for you and your family. The booklets include daily scripture and devotions written by church members. Both are designed to enrich your experience of the season. We hope you find them meaningful and share them with your friends. Use these online versions or pick up hard copies at church.

Dec 5, 12, 19 - Wednesdays in Advent

Wednesdays in Advent are December 5, 12 and 19. All are invited to take a peaceful midweek break during the hectic holiday season. The noontime service incorporates worship, prayer, and meaningful holiday stories to help us prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. The service is at 12:00, followed by a light lunch at 12:30. Lunch is $8, no reservation needed.

Dec 9 – Bach Cantata

Sunday, December 9, the Idlewild Choir and Soloists will present J.S. Bach’s Advent cantata, “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland” (“Come Now, Savior of the Gentiles”) during 11:00 worship. The cantata is based on Hymn 102, which we will be singing each Sunday of Advent at the lighting of the Advent Candle. The Collegium Musicum from the University of Memphis will join with Idlewild Choir for this presentation. The Collegium is composed of students and teachers playing various of musical instruments from earlier periods of European music.

Sun Dec 9 - Poinsettia deadline

Order Christmas poinsettias for the sanctuary! The poinsettias will be in the sanctuary Sundays, December 16 and 23. Names will be in the bulletin Sunday, December 16. You can give poinsettias in honor or in memory of friends and loved ones. Each poinsettia is $10. Click to order online.  Pick up an order form at church or print and mail your order. (Payment must be received with your order form.) Individual acknowledgements will not be made.

Sun Dec 9 - QUEST Youth Christmas Party

QUEST Christmas Party is 5:45-7:30 p.m. December 9 at the home of Lily Karnes (493 Williamsburg Lane). Dinner served. Remember: Bring a gift to exchange/steal/take away (whatever you want to call it) within the group. The gift should not be more than $10 in value, but it could be a little as one cent—it’s all about how you wrap it!

Sundays, Dec 9 & 16 - Cozy Kits and Stockings 

Sponsor a Cozy Kit  or fill Stockings for our friends at More Than A Meal. On Sunday December 9 and 16, the MTAM team will be selling Cozy Kits and distributing stockings outside the T.K. Young Room. Cozy Kits include items to keep our homeless guests warm during the cold months, and can be sponsored for $10 per kit. Take a stocking and return it filled with sweet treats. Stockings need to be returned to the church no later than Monday, December 17.

Sat Dec 15 - Young Adults Christmas Party

The Christmas party for young adult’s is at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Westlake’s. Touch base with Elizabeth H. Doolin if you need more info.

Tues Dec. 18 - YAW Ornament Exchange

The Young Women’s Ornament Exchange is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Whitney Getman’s. Contact Elizabeth H. Doolin if you need more info.

Thursdays, Dec 20 and 27 - MIFA Family Service Projects

MIFA Home for the Holidays Meals on Wheels is an opportunity to serve with your children. MIFA will hold service events Thursdays, Dec. 20 and 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to help make the holiday season brighter for elderly men and women in need. Participants will make colorful cards and ornaments for meal recipients, then carpool around town to deliver the gifts and hot lunches. Upon returning to MIFA, participants will have a light lunch and share their service stories. Please RSVP to Dorothy McClure at dmcclure@mifa.org.

Jan 2-5 - 2019 Montreat College Conference

Are you a college student interested in attending the 2019 Montreat College Conference? Join the UKirk Memphis group from Rhodes College and the University of Memphis as we travel to Montreat, North Carolina to gather with college students and faith leaders from around the country. Dates are January 2-5 (Wed-Sat). Cost is $145 (scholarships available) This year’s focus is on compassionate community: “The 2019 College Conference at Montreat will respond to God’s call for compassion in a broken world. As a community of faith we will discern God’s compassionate nature and how God is calling us to act with compassion in our communities, campuses, churches, and families.” If you are interested, please contact Elizabeth H. Jan 6 - Early Enrichment Center Grand Opening

A grand opening celebration of the new Early Enrichment Center (EEC) at Idlewild will be held Sunday, January 6 at 1:00. Please make plans to join in the celebration!

Many volunteers are needed to help with preparations! Please email eecidlewild@gmail.com if you can join in. Needs include: sewing toddler “sleeping bags”; painting bookshelves; moving tables, chairs, and bookshelves from basement to classrooms; painting creative angles around the classroom doors; providing creative woodwork (trees, clouds, etc.) to cover support columns; preparing/hanging art; giving barely used toys, and donating couches or chairs for the teachers workroom.
